Sputtering of water ice

چکیده
We present results of a range of experiments of sputtering of water ice together with a guide to the literature. We studied how sputtering depends on the projectile energy and fluence, ice growth temperature, irradiation temperature and external electric fields. We observed luminescence from the decay of H(2p) atoms sputtered by heavy ion impact, but not bulk ice luminescence. Radiolyzed ice does not sputter under 3.7 eV laser irradiation. 2002 Elsevier B.V. Dynamics of the sputtering of water from ice films by collisions with energetic xenon atoms.
The flow of energy from the impact site of a heavy, translationally energetic xenon atom on an ice surface leads to several non-equilibrium events. The central focus of this paper is on the collision-induced desorption (sputtering) of water molecules into the gas-phase from the ice surface. Sputtering is strongly activated with respect to xenon translational energy, and a threshold for desorpti...
متن کاملMechanisms of O2 sputtering from water ice by keV ions
We have conducted experiments on the sputtering of water ice by 100 keV Ar+ between 20 and 150 K. Our findings indicate that the temperature dependence of the total sputtering yield is heavily influenced by the thermal and irradiation history of the ice, showing a complex dependence on irradiation fluence that is correlated to the ejection of O2 molecules. The results suggest that O2 produced b...
متن کاملMagnetospheric ion sputtering and water ice grain size at Europa
We present the first calculation of Europa’s sputtering (ion erosion) rate as a function of position on Europa’s surface. We find a global sputtering rate of 2 10 H2O s , some of which leaves the surface in the form of O2 and H2. The calculated O2 production rate is 1 10 O2 s , H2 production is twice that value. The total sputtering rate (including all species) peaks at the trailing hemisphere ...
متن کاملInteraction of carboxylic acids and water ice probed by argon ion induced chemical sputtering
In this paper, we investigated the interaction of simple carboxylic acids, formic acid (FA), acetic acid (AA), and propionic acid (PA) with thin layers of water ice in the temperature range of 110-190 K in ultrahigh vacuum. The focus, however, is on the AA-ice system. Molecularly thin layers of these systems were prepared on a pre-cooled polycrystalline copper substrate. The interactions and ph...
متن کاملAngular dependence of the sputtering yield of water ice by 100 keV proton bombardment
We measured the total sputtering yield of amorphous water ice for 100 keV H as a function of the projectile incidence angle, and the angular distribution of the ejected H2O and O2 molecules, using a quartz-crystal microbalance and mass spectrometry, respectively, at temperatures of 20 K and 100 K. The total sputtering yield follows a cos h dependence, with f ffi 1.3, regardless of the irradiati...
